Recommendations

In the nondual traditions awareness itself is said to be the ultimate medicine, the ultimate healer. In this sense, the only thing we need to be fully satisfied and complete is to be aware. All other conditions in our lives can change, but we can still be whole, integrated and complete.

In this audio recording, Ron Stewart describes how the Radiant Mind book and course helped him to recognize the healing power of unconditioned awareness during his time with cancer.

An excerpt from that recording:

...I was told that I had only weeks or a few months to live and every time I met with another doctor the news became more specific and in a sense, more dire. And the interesting thing was that in each one of those three occasions as soon as the doctor began talking with me about my condition and the prognosis, I just spontaneously entered this deep state of peace in which what I was hearing and was discussing with the doctor was perfectly okay with me. I had no problem with it. And upon reading those questions in the book and Peter asking the question “have you ever experienced unconditioned awareness?”, having just read those first few chapters of the book and read Peter’s description of unconditioned awareness, it dawned on me that yes, in fact I had, in a very profound and peaceful way.

Ron Stewart, Portland

The Radiant Mind Audio Course:

When I began to using the audio version of Radiant Mind I experienced a new dimension that isn’t available in the book. That new dimension is Peter’s voice. Listening to him explain Radiant Mind and lead me through his deep considerations was a transforming experience for me. I don’t see how anyone could listen to these CDs and not have some experience of Radiant Mind. There were times when I finished listening to a CD and I wasn’t sure I had heard anything and yet I was left in a state of thoughtless no-thing-ness. They have had a great influence in the transformation from separation to resting in unconditioned awareness. I recommend that anyone interested in exploring Radiant Mind listen to the audio course, even if you have read the book. I’m sure you will enjoy the experience.

Ben Hursh, Anacostes

Stephan writes a webpage on Examiner.com for Psychology and Spirituality in the Bay Area.

Here is an excerpt from their interview.

Stephen: Is there a difference between an experience of awakening and the goal of psychotherapy?

Peter: Ultimately no. The nondual traditions take us to the end of
what’s possible in terms of human freedom and liberation. They take us
to a point where we rest in nondual awareness. This is a space where
suffering is no longer possible. This space is unconditioned, to the
point where we can’t even say there’s no suffering! The idea of
suffering doesn’t have any reference point at all. In this sense there
is nowhere further to go. Nothing more is possible in terms of the
momentary evolution of our consciousness. I think that ultimately all
therapies must lead to that same point. Otherwise there is still a gap,
there is still a potential for suffering to arise. And so there is
still a role for therapy. All therapy, if it’s to take people the full
distance, must become nondual.

Stephen: I am a psychotherapist and I’ve been engaged in Buddhist
practices for many years but I’m not able to bring my clients, even
myself, to nondual awareness. What’s needed for a therapist to do that?

Peter: Well first a therapist needs to have reliable access to
centerless awareness by seeing that unstructured awareness is our
primordial state. In this state there’s no inside or outside, no
therapist as a distinct identity. From within this state bridges are
built, mainly through types of inquiry that dissolve fixations, and
silence that allows the mind to still as well. The bridges we build in
our conversations allow clients to move from being preoccupied with
themselves, through to the ground of being itself. This is called
nondual inquiry. It unfolds in a really precise way but without any
agency.

Stephen: So, I’m wondering if you have a story that illustrates the
relationship between nondualism and suffering, perhaps from your own
life?

Peter: Yes. Two years ago I had major back surgery using a relatively
new procedure that has risks associated with it. Going into the
operation I thought, "All I need to take away from this operation is
that I am conscious," because in the nondual traditions awareness
itself is said to be the ultimate medicine, the ultimate healer. In
this sense the only thing we need in order to be fully satisfied and
complete is to be aware. All other conditions in our lives can change,
but we can still be whole, integrated and complete. So, I thought
ultimately what I need when I come out of this operation is to be
aware. So, as long as I am aware, I have enough.

When I came out of the operation five hours later, it was a beautiful
experience. The first thing I thought as I regained consciousness was,
“Wow, I am aware, that is wonderful. Ah, everything from here is a
bonus for me. I can see, and I can hear, this is really wonderful."
Then I started to see if I could move, "Yes, I can move my shoulders
and my hands. How wonderful to have my hands". Then I tried moving my
left leg, “Yes this is really great.” Then I tried moving my right leg,
and it didn’t move, and I thought, “Ah, but still, I’ve got two arms
and one leg and I’m aware. This is so wonderful.” And after a few
minutes I could wiggle my right toes. Wow.

This type of experience can provide a beautiful point of reference
because we can see that we don’t need to get so involved in the
conditions of our lives in order to be fulfilled. We think that we
can’t be complete because we don’t have enough money, because we have
problems with our body, or our relationships aren’t working. But
ultimately it’s possible to be complete and fulfilled moment by moment
with everything exactly as it is.

Stephen: It sounds like gratitude is a big part of your experience?

Peter: Yes, pure gratitude, thanking the universe for everything, exactly as it is.

Stephen: Can you say something about the growing number of western therapist who are working in this way?

Peter: There is a surge of interest in this area and a growing number
of therapists and coaches who are able to introduce their clients to
the nondual awareness and use this as a resource for integration and
wellbeing. There are thousands of therapists and coaches who have
extensive first-hand experience with Buddhist and Hindu forms of
nondual spirituality, for 20, 30, even 40 years. They naturally bring
all the wisdom they’ve achieved to their work with clients. Also, many
clients have received nondual teachings. They often seek out therapists
who are familiar with the nondual. Also, there are now programs that
specifically training people in nondual therapy. This form of therapy
is just in its infancy in the West, but it is destined to grow and make
a major contribution.

Stephen: Is there any caution or danger in working in this way?

Peter: People have a tendency to formalize things, so there’s a danger
that people could relate to nondual therapy as a skill-set. Therapists
might try to activate a recognition of nondual awareness in their
clients using some techniques they’ve learnt. Nondual awareness isn’t
an altered state of consciousness. It isn’t anything at all. If
therapists think they’re “doing” something, or even “looking” for any
change, it’s no longer nondual therapy.

Stephen: How do we learn more about nonduality and psychotherapy?

Peter: Well, the Science and Nonduality Conference is a good starting
point. Then there’s the Institute for Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy.
And I have my own 10 month training in Nondual Teaching and Therapy.

I am just back in Seattle after offering a wonderful evening presentation on Nondual Healing at Long Beach Memorial Hospital and running a great workshop on the same theme with Dr. Mariusz Wirga, exploring how it’s possible to dissolve all struggle, close the gap, and rest as awareness even in the midst of life’s challenges.

Last week I recorded a lovely interview with Elese Coit from her fantastically titled radio program "A New Way to Handle Absolutely Everything." My talk with Elese gives a really a good overview of Radiant Mind and I recommend it as a first point of call if you have friends who are interested in what you are doing with Radiant Mind.

We are now in full swing with last minute preparations for the opening workshop of the Vancouver Radiant Mind Course. I will upload some dialogue from the workshop in our next newsletter to give you the flavor of the event.

Warmest wishes,

you talk us through the different stages of Radiant Mind—how it
works. In your book you go into a lot of detail on this, so just
keeping it simple, what do you teach?

Peter: Radiant Mind is a nine month course, so it’s a different from a
satsang for example. I was running workshops and retreats and people
said, ‘Ok that’s great, but how can we stay involved with this over a
longer period of time when we’re involved in our daily activities,
taking care of families, work and so on?’ So I thought ‘ok we’ll do
something over nine months.’ Radiant Mind is a program that creates a
lot of opportunities for people to connect with me and each other in
workshops, teleconferences and phone work. People work with written
and audio material. There are lots of ways in which people to come
together for presence pure awareness. People create a type of
vibrational field, a meeting of minds, that moves people beyond what’s
happening at an egocentric level and then share in the space of pure
awareness.

Iain: And you feel that through going through this process people can
reach a state of comparative stability in unconditioned mind?

Peter: Little bit by little bit. In my work I distinguish between the
“purity,” “depth” and duration” with which we can presence
unconditioned awareness. Generally the process is one of deepening the
state and then slowly extending it. The more time we spend here, in the
place where there’s no where further to go, the more familiar we become
we this space and the easier it becomes to access it. In a sense we
create grooves in consciousness so then when we’re in a reactive state,
struggling with what’s happening, with some adjustment in the
conditions, we find ourselves back here. It can be as simple as
asking, “What is that I think I have lost?” It’s like being in an
elevator. We’re in the basement and it’s dark, it’s not what we want
it to be. But if we’ve made the journey into nondual awareness once,
ten times, a hundred times or more, our mind knows that journey, and it
starts to make it automatically. It’s like being able to drive to our
own home without needing to be aware of any sense of direction or
control. And this process is really enhanced by being in a community
that like adds that vibrational fuel that assists us in making this
journey to include this moment in this pure way.

Iain: So Peter, when you talk about ‘a place there’s nowhere further
to go,’ is that really true, that there’s nowhere further to go?

Peter: In this moment I feel there’s nowhere further to go. I cannot
imagine what that could be, because I don’t know where we are at the
moment! This is a state of not knowing. Because I can’t say where “I”
am at the moment, or what “this” is, there’s no idea of doing more of
this, or going forwards or going backwards. This is what’s meant by
nondual awareness; it’s the awareness within which no comparison is
possible.

I hope you are well and that 2010 is a wonderful year for your growth and expansion.

We are now in Seattle, exploring our new environment and enjoying the possibility of being settled—at least for a while.

This year has started really well. Two weeks ago I had the
pleasure of sitting with the Portland Radiant Mind Group for an
evening. I was really inspired by how this group meets and works
together. I have just returned from a five day trip to San Francisco
where I had meetings with many people who support Timeless Wisdom in
various ways. I also did an evening and a one day workshop at East Bay
Open Circle
which was delightful.

The Nondual Teacher and Therapist Training
begins in March and we will have a full course. We are making some
changes to the Training in order to enhance the networking between
participants. It will be a very rich Training. The preparation for
the 9 Month Radiant Mind Course in Vancouver is underway. We have a enthusiastic team helping to create
this course. I have a sense that it will be a watershed for Timeless
Wisdom.

If you have
friends who have any questions about the Radiant Mind Course we
have a number of Intro Telecalls. These
will give you a flavor of Radiant Mind.

Thanks for all you support and enthusiastic engagement with our work.
With love,
An excerpt from the interview…

Gary:
How would you define surrender? Who or what is one surrendering to, in
your opinion? God, Universe, Self, Soul, What Is, present
moment…?

Peter: A term that makes more sense to me
than ‘surrender’ is ‘receptivity.’ Surrender can easily sound as if
there is someone doing it. Someone is surrendering. I feel that real
surrender is receiving and being touched by everything that is. No
effort is needed to do this: to be in this state of pure receptivity.
We are not trying to manipulate or change the environment at all,
either what is happening inside of us or outside of us.

When
we are engaged in spiritual seeking, the seeking creates distance.
Seeking stops us from realizing what we are looking for. So long as we
are looking for something to happen in the future, we can’t be
fulfilled in this moment. The state we are looking for is the state
where there is nothing more that we need. The only way to be in this
space is to abide as awareness. Abiding as centerless awareness, is a
more profound state than even the highest spiritual ecstasy. Why?
Because spiritual ecstasy comes and goes. Awareness does not come and
go. It is ever present.

Gary: Is there a practice or methodology you follow that would create surrender? If so, please share!

Peter:
There is nothing we have to do to be here. Simple things often work the
best. Simple contemplation, simple meditation, being with what is,
meditating and connecting with space, feeling the space of our
existence. In simple contemplation we take a break from the routine
activity of daily life and bring awareness into the foreground. We can
ask questions like “Who is aware? Who is doing this?” This creates
openness into this place that is infinite, that has no center, that
which allows everything to be as it is. It can be done just as well
with eyes open as with eyes closed.

We can also pray to
that which has no source. We can extend the prayer, and not know who or
what we are praying to. Listening can also be profound. Not listening
for anything in particular, but being in a state of total receptivity.
Just listening. Listening to the silence of pure being.

Transcribed by Rebecca Cruz

Peter: So what is that? Are you feeling it now?

Student: Yes. It’s a discomfort in here. It’s an energetic discomfort that got triggered by an external event about myself.

P: Okay, so you’re feeling uncomfortable, yes? That’s it!

S: That’s it?

P: In a way, you’re asking too much to not feel discomfort. This is what I’m saying: we’re going to suffer. To live in some illusion that we shouldn’t feel uncomfortable is crazy, because it’s unrealistic. So again, it’s important to be realistic about how we’re living our lives. To think this shouldn’t be happening to you when it is, there is a disconnection. You’re feeling uncomfortable and that will change. And it will come back again.

S: I feel a lot more spacious just taking that in.

P: Yes, of course. If you say: “Okay, look even though I’m sitting here in this workshop and it’s meant to be all smooth, I’m going to be doing it a little bit differently for the next two hours. I’ll be in discomfort.”

What I’m saying is if you can create the space for yourself, if you can accommodate that, it will change things the moment you do that. You might be in this discomfort that comes and goes for the next couple of hours or for the rest of the day.

The other thing is—don’t look for things to be helpful. For example, seeing: “Ah, that’s good. That was helpful.” is part of the same package. It’s still looking for a way out. That way of thinking is conditioning a resistance to suffering, which perpetuates and intensifies the suffering, and an attachment to the release of the suffering.

This is simply the dynamic that keeps us involved in experiencing samsara, the cycle of pleasure and pain. And so again, what’s possible is this expansion, broadening the river of life, expanding our capacity to feel comfort and discomfort, without needing to change the discomfort or perpetuate the comfort.

In a way, it’s simply maturing our understanding of the human condition.

S: So in terms of resting in unconditioned awareness, if I’m not trying to change the discomfort, I’m wondering if I would be in a place where it can’t get any better than this. Because when I’m feeling discomfort and I ask myself a checking question, I’ll answer: “Well, you can be improved,” even though I might feel a space around me.

P: Sure. If you’re feeling discomfort in that way, there’s not even much point in asking a checking question, because it’s clear and obvious that you’re not in unconditioned awareness.

S: So in unconditioned awareness, anything can arise, including something that’s uncomfortable? Does it just dissolve?

P: Whatever it is, it doesn’t need to go away.

S: Or stay?

P: Or stay. Yes.

The second 9 month Nondual Teacher Training started in February this year in Boulder with 38 participants. This is the first training offered in North American and the level of interest and caliber of participation is truly outstanding.

We have people from most nondual traditions in the Training: teachers and masters from Zen, Sufism, Western-style Mindfulness, Dzogchen and Mahamudra. Some participants have developed their own forms for transmitting nondual wisdom. The expertise in traditional nondual modalities is powerfully complemented by the participation of a very large number of psychologists and counselors who have decades of expertise in a wide range of therapeutic approaches. About 2/3 of the people in the Training are graduates of Radiant Mind. The blend of experience, and depth and breadth of expertise is quite unique.

We are using a structure in the Training that is based on demonstrations of nondual transmission to the larger group and in smaller breakout groups, demonstrations and explanations of the Radiant Mind form of nondual work supported by a reference manual, regular conference calls, coaching calls and field work. The field work happens in between the three full group workshops. This is where the people in the Training explore new structures for delivering nondual transmission, refine the work they are presently doing, experiment with integrating nonduality into new domains, or begin doing something they have never done before!

The field work that people are engaged with is coming into place right now. The range of courses, workshops, small and large events, that people are envisioning, designing and beginning, is wonderfully diverse and varied. Several people are loosening the structures that have defined their teaching and discovering how to work “on the spot” with whatever is arising, others are creating bridges from the nondual into areas such as end-of-life, social activism, and explicitly building nondualism into intimate relationships. Others in the Training are experientializing the teaching of nondual texts, exploring how to introduce people to nondualism through natural meditation. The new events that are being created include informal evening meetings, weekend workshops and longitudinal programs. Many people are “out there” doing things that they wouldn’t have imagined 4 months ago.

I think we are all learning that far more is possible than we’d imagined. We’re seeing a level of interest by so many people, in internal sources of fulfillment, and an availability to rest in awareness itself, that was impossible even just one or two years ago.

We stepped into a sunlit room, warmed even more by the smiling faces of the people inside—first-time students and mentors of the course, Peter and Marie, and a few auditors from the upcoming NDTT course. The building, a large circular room, was supported by grand wooden pillars and had windows that framed the forest and hills of the property. After saying a few hellos and helping with the sound system, I took a seat, and settled into the space.

Questions and laughter arose naturally out of the silence and I witnessed our collective desire to understand dissolve and reappear - again and again. At one point, in an elated moment of pride, I decided I had figured "it" out. A grin spread across my face. The more we talk and try to dissect and understand what nondual awareness is, the further we move from it. I attempted to share my grand accomplishment with Peter - "I think I get it!". He misunderstood, gestured to the PA system, and assuming that I had figured out the microphone troubles, he nodded and smiled. Perfectly deflated, but not deterred, my grin returned and I settled back into my seat.
Report by Shayla Wright

This year in our Radiant Mind course in Boulder, we have 11 people, from all over North America, who are training to be mentors. Each one engages with one or two mentees at a time, who are participants in the Radiant Mind course. Someone asked me recently, “Why do you call it the mentor stream?” I told them that in the Radiant Mind work, we often relate to each other as streams of consciousness, instead of solid, separate individuals. In traditional Buddhist teachings, one who decides to follow the Noble Eightfold Path has “entered the stream” of enlightenment, and is often described as a “stream-enterer.” So our mentors-in-training are people who have entered the stream together, where they are offering themselves to this possibility of sharing unconditioned awareness with another human being.

What keeps revealing itself so beautifully is the difference between doing it and just thinking about it. Before entering into the actual stream, some of the mentors were wondering about how it would happen, and what would support them. In one of our first supervision calls, a mentor reported, with great surprise and delight, that he was actually able to facilitate in his client a movement from pain and contraction into awareness and ease. This kind of report happens on all of the calls. When we enter this stream of mentoring, something happens to our individual consciousness—we can do things, make way for possibilities, that our conditioned mind has no idea about. On one level, there are many skills we can learn about how to engage in this process. On another level, holding on to those skills in any way is simply a protective device. We are simply building confidence in awareness itself, knowing that if we let go of needing to know, needing to attain, needing to be someone or no-one, everything we need is right here, and the process happens by itself.
RM Mentor, Jeff Munn shares his experience of creating a "Friends of Radiant Mind Group" in Washington DC:

I was introduced to Radiant Mind through Peter’s book, which I read in the fall of 2007. I have been a meditator and explorer in this area for many years, but Peter’s work resonated with me in a way that I had not felt before. There was something there that was drawing me to explore it, and with that impulse, I found myself signing up for the Boulder 2008 Radiant Mind course.

I could not have put together this group without my good friend Susan. Susan and I often find ourselves talking about spiritual topics, or having discussions about how to be in the world and how to manage often stressful professional lives in Washington, DC. I introduced Susan to Peter’s book as the Boulder course was winding down, and we found ourselves talking about starting a discussion group in Washington for others who might be feeling the same challenges that we were. We reached out to friends who we thought might be interested—Susan has organized and led other groups and knew exactly what to do.

Our first meeting was in November of 2008 and we have been meeting monthly since. We just started having conference calls as well, because there was a desire to open this space together more frequently. We have about 10 who participate on some level, and a core group of about six who are generally at a given meeting or call.

I was a bit uncertain about starting a group, first because I did not feel qualified to "teach" anything, and second because even now, most of the people in the group have not read Peter’s Radiant Mind book or worked with him. But the group somehow has come together anyway, and Peter has been very supportive along the way. If there is an essence of this work, it is in paradoxically creating (or allowing) a space in which there is no structure. Our minds fight this, but there is great peace in the letting go, in the allowing of whatever is happening, in seeing that in this very moment, there is nothing we need to do or know.

This is what is happening in our group. With each meeting, the sense of needing to know something (and that there is in fact anything that we can know) eases. We share whatever comes up, whether in speech or silence. And we are working together to create additional opportunities to share and refine our experience.

I’d encourage others who are interested to start groups as well. The energy of a group seems to more easily enable entering into a state of unconditioned awareness, even for those who are otherwise unfamilar with it. And our group work seems to enhance what we each do as individuals, whether that includes Radiant Mind or not.

Interviewer: Many people who meditate want to achieve what you sometimes describe as the "arrival point".

Peter: In natural meditation there’s really no arriving; we could say there is just being. The very idea of "arriving" also means we can
become unstuck. That’s what continually happens in a traditional
meditation practice. We start at a point where we feel that something is wrong, something is missing, something needs to be done, and we look to meditation as a method for arriving at a place of completion.

With meditation, an internal change happens in people’s experience: thinking slows down, a feeling of tranquility emerges, and our heart can open up. If we like what is happening, we might feel that, ah, we’ve arrived. We feel good. This is where we wanted our practice to take us.

But we still haven’t entered the space of natural meditation. We are still in time. Even when we’ve arrived, we’re still in time. We encounter a state within our meditation that lets us stop. We let go of all ambition and endeavor and finally come to rest, satisfied with what is. But because this is a conditioned state, it will invariably change. We will lose it. Things will change in the external
environment. New sensations will arise in our body. New thoughts, images, and memories will come up. We’ll start to think about the future and how we will handle different situations. At some point
we’ll see that we are no longer resting. We’ll figure that we’ve lost it.

“Wow that was great! What happened? What do I need to do now?” We are thrown back into the project of recreating a goal and going after it. This is meditation as a project, and this is the way a lot of
people engage in meditation. There’s a meditation, a meditator, and
then the project, a particular way of practicing that’s meant to produce a particular outcome. This is different from natural meditation.

In natural meditation there’s nothing to do, whatsoever. There’s no
notion of being on the path, nor any experience of having arrived, because there’s no point of reference. This is often called meditation without a point of reference, or meditation that is no longer meditation.

Interviewer: Within this idea of waking up without a reference point,
but still living in this world, what about suffering and fear and
anger? Waking up and being in this place of non-referential awareness,
do we still experience suffering - personal suffering and the suffering in the world? Are we the same person, but with awareness?

Peter: Nothing changes. What we’re talking about is just our natural
way of being. We’re not talking about an event. This is not something that happens. We’re talking about natural meditation as the presencing of nondual awareness. Because it’s non-referential, because it is contentless, we can’t really think about it. There’s nothing to think
about!

In relationship to suffering, it’s quite intriguing because something happens in the state of nondual awareness that is totally unique.
When we ask the question; "Am I suffering? Is any suffering occurring in this moment?" the answer is clearly, "No. I’m not suffering. "
There’s nothing that we can pinpoint, nothing we can identify within
the field of awareness that we could say is an example, an instance of suffering. At this point people can easily conclude that this is a
state that’s free of suffering.

But equally we can’t find the absence of suffering either. We can’t say, "Ah, now I’m no longer suffering,” because nothing has dropped out of my experience. It’s totally unconditioned, totally transcendental.
When I say it’s transcendental, it’s not somewhere else. It’s this
state right now. If it were somewhere else, then it would be a
conditioned experience. It would only arise, for example, when we are
disconnected from our sense of embodiment, with who we are as a finite discrete individual.

The aim of all meditation practice, in fact of everything we do, is to arrive at the space of pure effortless being. Once we’re in the space of pure being, there’s nothing more we need to do. However, this isn’t where we begin. We begin with the experience that something is missing and we seek to "close the gap" between what is and how we want
things to be. If we think that the goal of meditation is to "become
someone" or to "be somewhere" we stay inside the cycle of
practicing: making some progress, feeling thwarted and sometimes briefly "arriving." At some point within our practice, though, we see that there’s no gap.

We see that nondual awareness isn’t different from anything. It’s not a thing. It doesn’t have a structure. It’s completely consistent with
everything. It’s consistent with doing nothing. It’s consistent with a formal meditation practice. If what looks like a formal meditation practice is happening within the space of nondual awareness, there’s no internal experience of a meditator trying to be somewhere else,
even though it could look that way from the outside.

The trick is to use a practice that shows us with maximum efficiency that there is only "this" - and we don’t need to be anyone, or do anything, to be here.

Interviewer: Does this space of pure being impact suffering in the world?

Peter: In the space of pure being, there’s a simultaneous
identification and disidentification with everything that’s happening.
So in relationship to the suffering in the world and the suffering of
humanity, there’s a complete identification with everything that’s happening, because there’s no separation. There’s no one inside, and
so everything is included. There’s no difference between awareness and what’s happening in the field. In a sense there is just a state of pure, unbounded receptivity that takes everything in, just as it is.

But also, there’s no center to this state. No one is receiving, and it’s this "no one" that has the power to transform the world. When consciousness is resting in nondual awareness, there’s no boundary,
nothing to defend, nothing to protect. Awareness fully and comprehensively penetrates each and every reality it encounters. It fully receives these realities without any distortion, dilution, or interpretation. There’s no judgment of right and wrong. There’s a complete entry into these experiences. Contentless awareness engages reality in a way that liberates people from ideas of freedom and entrapment, because this awareness isn’t bound by judgments of right or wrong. Nondual awareness isn’t a state, an experience, it isn’t a "thing" so it can’t be impeded by anything!

Training as a mentor offers you the opportunity to recognize this awareness in the people you are working with, and help them to access it themselves. The marvelous thing is that in the non-dual understanding, I am only ever working with myself. And nothing needs to change, in myself or in my students.
Joel Agee, a student of Peter and
Radiant Mind coach has just published a vivid account of his engagement
with Radiant Mind. Like many of us of a particular age, he got his
start in what was then a culture of altered states of consciousness –
reading, travel, ashrams, drugs, political action, teachers, poetry, massive gatherings
and music – these were our gateways that became the never-ending
quest, the “Journey to the East.”

“Call off the search! The idea is
that we already are where we want to be, and that we need only to
stop searching. Its a tricky proposition: enlightenment by
declaration. Maybe works for some. It didn’t work for me."

“I traveled the long road of
seeking. Lots of suffering, lots of confusion. Then, one day it came
to an end.”

	Seven years ago, Joel “stumbled”
upon Peter’s web site – Peter who was a university professor in
that early incarnation. Joel was reminded of an earlier article by
Peter he had read 2 years prior, about the practice of observing
steadily and without interference, the perpetual motion of attraction
and aversion that prompts most of our actions and fuels directly the
enterprise of practice itself. Exposed to the simple lucidity of
awareness itself, practice dissolves into the practice of no
practice. “Something about this made me intensely curious.” When
he emailed Peter, Joel was deeply intrigued by Peter’s
assertion, “I can show you this over the phone.”

And so Joel concludes today, from his
on-going work with Peter and Radiant Mind, “Nothing needs to be
done. Witness without judgment, the spasms of defense and aggression,
the hint of a child’s tears behind the eyes; relax and dissolve.”
Joel’s writing is delightful, human in the best sense, and a parable
for the journey we many of us have made to the threshing floor of
Radiant Mind. Get the magazine and read for yourself, and begin to be
curious about the years you may have spent…polishing the
mirror. As Dudjom Rimpoche has said, “Rest in natural great peace,
this exhausted mind.”
